      Danjiangkou reservoir, the water source of the middle line of South-to-North Water Diversion Project, is the main citrus production region in the northern China. To protect the water quality, the present project established citrus ecological orchards in northern area by combining the construction of standard orchard, the cultivation of ecological condition and integrated water fertilizer technology.SThese technologies included reducing the planting density, simplifying the tree structure, planting grass and so on. Moreover, we employed integrated water fertilizer technology to reduce the applying of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, then increase their use efficiency and reduce agricultural non-point source pollution. Taken together, through this project, the usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was significantly decreased, the chemical herbicides were completely eradicated, and the use ratio of chemical fertilizers was significantly increased. In the demonstration citrus orchard, the superior-quality fruits was increased to 85% and the total soluble solution was over 12%. These results suggested that the demonstration orchard realized the goals of low cost with high benefit, superior fruit quality, and ecological safety, which provided a practical reference for establishing ecological orchard and developing citrus industry in health and sustainability in the northern citrus production area.
