Annona atemoya Hort is susceptible to flooding, while Annona glabora (G) is highly flooding resistant and can serve as an excellent flooding-resistant rootstock for Annona crops. However, there is problem of incompatibility when A. atemoya is grafted onto A. glabora. In this study, A. glabora (G) was used as rootstock, the hybrid (AR) of A. atemoya cv. African Pride A. reticulate as interstock, and the one-year-old budwoods from four cultivars of A. atemoya, ie. African Pride (AP), Paxton (P), Pink’s Mammoth (PM) and Bullock’s Heart (BH) were used as scions for the grafting tests. The results showed that there was no difference in survival rate among the scion cultivars. Among them, the survival rate of spring and summer grafting of AP/AR/G (scion/interstock/rootstock) reached 83.7% and 77.9%, respectively. The grafted trees maintained normal growth in the nursery and in the field for three years, suggesting that the use of the interstock had well solved the problem of incompatibility between A. atemoya A. and glabora. When grafting was conducted in summer, the one-year-old budwoods as scions, which were collected in spring and stored by inserting them in soil, had a significantly higher survival rate than current-season mature spring shoots as scion (77.9% vs 38.1%). |
