Abstract: Juicy sac granulation is a physiological disorder that seriously impacts fruit quality and could often be observed during maturation and post-harvest storage of citrus fruits. To develop efficient techniques for nondestructive examination of juicy sac granulation, 'Guanxi' pumelo [Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck] fruits, which have been storages for 30 d post harvest, were scanned with a 1.5 T nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, the results from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were then verified with the anatomical data of the fruits in this study. Results herein showed that T2 weighted images (T2WI) could successfully distinguish the pulpous tissue from the spongy tissue, based on signal intensity that is determined by relative water content of tissues. T2WI had lower signals in granulated regions, suggesting the typical characteristic of water loss of the tissues. For juicy sac granulation, T2WI had a diagnostic rate of 100%, which is significantly higher than that of T1 weighted images (T1WI, 41.7%), according to χ-square test (χ2 = 5.76,P = 0.016). Even though both T1WI and T2WI could display seeds clearly, T2WI had much higher resolutions in pulpous tissues, and therefore, could be used for nondestructive examination of juicy sac granulation and evaluation of seediness of pomelo fruits before marketing. |
