After heat treatment combined with stem tip culture detoxification, this study used one-year-old ‘Shine Muscat’ grape trees carrying either the Grapevine Pinot gris virus (GPGV) or the Grapevine rupestris stem pitting associated virus (GRSPaV) or both as test materials to investigate the effects of different viruses on the growth and leaf nutrient content of ‘Shine Muscat’ grapes. The results showed the growth indicators of the virus-containing test materials were significantly lower than those of the detoxified seedlings, with the exception of the number of nodes. There was no significant difference in plant height and internode length between plants carrying only GRSPaV and only GPGV. However, the plant height and internode length were significantly reduced after the combined infection of GRSPaV and GPGV. The stems of GRSPaV-only were significantly thinner than those of GPGV-only, and the stems were even thinner after GRSPaV and GPGV co-infection. Total root length, mean root diameter, root volume, and root dry weight and fresh weight were not significantly different among plants with GPGV only, GRSPaV only, and plants with both GRSPaV and GPGV, but were significantly lower than those of detoxified seedlings. Leaf Ca and Mn contents were significantly lower in plants carrying a single virus, GPGV or GRSPaV, and in plants carrying GRSPaV and GPGV, compared with virus-free plants. The contents of Ca and Mn in the asymptomatic leaves of plants carrying only GPGV were significantly higher than those of plants carrying only GRSPaV; the contents of K, Zn, and B in the symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves of susceptible plants were significantly higher than those of detoxified seedlings; the contents of K in the asymptomatic leaves of plants carrying only GPGV were significantly higher than those of plants carrying only GRSPaV, and there was no significant difference in the contents of Zn and B. The contents of Mg and Fe in the symptomatic leaves of plants carrying virus were higher than those of detoxified seedlings, The contents of Mg, Fe, and Cu in the symptomatic leaves of plants carrying virus were higher than those of detoxified seedlings , but they were lower than those of detoxified seedlings. The contents of Mg and Fe in the non-symptomatic leaves of GPGV-carrying plants were significantly lower than that of GRSPaV-carrying plants, and there was no significant difference in B content. In conclusion, it was shown that a single GPGV or GRSPaV inhibited plant aboveground and root growth by affecting the content of nutrient elements, and that the effects on plants were exacerbated by a compound infection of these two viruses. |
